Premier High School of New Braunfels is located near several residential neighborhoods with walking trails and pedestrian friendly sidewalks. Students are taking advantage of their campus location to earn their Physical Education credits.
Since many students have jobs before and after school, Campus Director Richard Ramirez and his staff wanted to come up with a creative way to help students earn their required P.E. credits. The ideal solution was to invite and encourage students to walk the trails and sidewalks that he used in the evenings and on weekends for his own exercise.
Students were asked if they would be interested in a walking program. The next day, 12 of them signed up and came ready to work out.
Ramirez said, “I love the fact that I get to talk to kids outside the school building. During our walks, they share all kinds of things about themselves that I normally wouldn’t get to know.”
The students began with three-mile walks each day, and they are slowly increasing the distance traveled.
In addition to walking and running, students also keep individual logs in which they set their own goals.
“The exciting thing is that students who don’t even need the P.E. credit have also signed up to participate,” Ramirez said.
